Radiofrequency Treatment for Dry Eye

The ENVISION by InMode platform has two specific devices for the treatment of dry eye. Radiofrequency (RF) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy. These devices come from the world of dermatology. During these facial treatments there was a profound improvement in dry eye symptoms. Further testing was done and “voilà”, these new revolutionary treatments were open to the eye care world. The results were profound and repeatable, making them an excellent choice for getting rid of the source of Dry Eye. They both have their benefits, but RF is specifically good at treating Dry Eye caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
 

Our eyelids contain glands that produce oils, called Meibomian Glands. Every time we blink, we squeeze these oils out. The oils then mix in with our tears and spread across our cornea. Our tears are essential for bringing oxygen to the eye, riding the surface of the eye from bacteria and viruses, giving us stable and comfortable vision, and so much more! Without these oils our tears evaporate quickly, and we are left with dry eyes. Today, we have seen a rise in dry eye patients, symptomatic or not. Most of that is caused by using digital devices. As we stare at the screens, we try to focus and absorb the information present, and our blink rate goes down. Less blinking means less oil, which leads to increased dry eyes.
 

RF or Forma I uses bipolar radiofrequency to deliver consistent and gentle “bulk” heating to the small delicate areas of the skin. The warming effect on the Meibomian Glands in the eyelids melts down the blocked oils that have hardened and allows the glands to flow and express. This heat penetrates both superficial and deep layers, stimulating collagen synthesis. This leads to increased Elastin and tightening of the skin, resulting in less wrinkles. Collagen Synthesis even helps regenerate glands that have previously atrophied from long term damage, turning back the clock on Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Forma I can be used on any skin type making it the true workhorse of Dry Eye treatment.
