Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for Dry Eyes

ENVISION by Inmode contains two devices for the treatment and management of dry eye disease. Radiofrequency (RF) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy. These devices were originally designed for dermatological purposes, and after the treatments they noticed a dramatic reduction in their patient’s dry eye symptoms. Both devices have their benefits, but IPL is specifically good at reducing inflammation in the skin, a contributing factor of dry eye symptoms.

Our eyelids contain glands that produce oils, called Meibomian Glands. Every time we blink, we squeeze those oils out. The oils then mix in with our watery tears to help them spread evenly across our cornea. Our tears are essential for:

  • Bringing oxygen to the eye

  • Flushing the surface of the eye from bacteria, viruses, and allergens

  • Giving us stable and comfortable vision

  • And so much more!

Without these oils our tears evaporate rather quickly, and we are left with dry eyes.

Just beneath the surface of the skin we have blood vessels. Certain inflammatory conditions can cause fine blood vessels to develop and grow. These abnormal blood vessels cause excess inflammation in the skin and are typically leaky. This leads to visible redness, swelling, and vascularity. The excess inflammation in the skin around the eyelids causes a breakdown of the oils within our oil glands. This eventually destroys the oils and oil glands within the eyelids causing dry eye symptoms. Those oils can even break down into a soap byproduct, which will cause frothing along the eyelids and a burning sensation!

IPL or Lumecca uses a high-intensity, broad spectrum light. The light penetrates to the superficial layers of the skin and is absorbed by melanin and pigmented lesions, as well as hemoglobin in superficial blood vessels. The light is changed to heat energy as it reaches the level of collagen beneath the skin which reduces inflammation and promotes “neocollagenesis”. Over the course of a 4-week period, the skin regenerates and produces new cells with less inflammation, and regenerates back to a younger, more youthful looking state. IPL also stimulates collagen synthesis which leads to tighter skin and less wrinkles. It is highly effective for the treatment of:

  • Rosacea

  • Demodex lid mites

  • Blepharitis

  • Sunspots

  • Styes and Chalazions

  • Wrinkles

  • Under-Eye Bags

  • And MORE!

IPL interrupts the dry eye inflammation cycle by bringing the tear film back to a normal state, resulting in an improvement in dry eye symptoms. There are a handful of different devices that perform IPL or Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT). However, Lumecca is the strongest and most effective of the IPL devices which makes it a FAVORITE of ours and our patients! The results speak for themselves! We are so excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment option.
